2010 Laura Hartwig Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Colchagua Valley
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva is sourced from 32-year old vines and apparently endured a long, drawn-out malolactic fermentation. It has a succulent, generous bouquet of blackberry, blueberry and violets, with fine delineation and well-integrated, judicious oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins. This has a core of pure black fruit laced with tobacco and graphite, while the finish demonstrates finesse and class. This is a top Cabernet from Colchagua that is well worth seeking out. Drink 2013-2019. Laura Hartwig Winery was established in 1990 and they presently cultivate around 80 hectares of vine in the Colchagua Valley. I met with Alejandro Hartwig Bisquertt at the winery to taste through his current releases, plus some mature examples.
Laura Hartwig is a new discovery for us, and if her 2010 value releases are any indication, certainly a winery to watch in the coming years. Consisting of 80 hectares in the Colchagua Valley, Laura Hartwig works biodynamically to cultivate her grapes. This particular cabernet is very well made, showing off beautiful currant and berry fruits, with admirable restraint, balance and texture combining to create an elegant, seamless cab if it were twice the price, let alone for the under $13 asking price. Very impressive! (Joe Manekin, K&L South American wine buyer)
