2009 Rombauer Napa Valley Merlot (Previously $30)

Wine Spectator writes of the 2009 vintage for California Merlot: "The 2009 vintage is one of the most successful ever for California Merlot. Featuring dozens of outstanding releases, it represents a long-awaited turnaround for this sometimes underperforming wine... Napa Merlots dominate the list of top bottlings, and overall I give the 2009 vintage a score of 93 points for Napa Valley." Blended with 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petite Verdot, this Rombauer Merlot spent 18 months in French and American oak. From the winery: "The Carneros region with its climate and clay soils allows us to produce a Merlot which is true to the varietal’s characteristics. The longer growing season allows the fruit to reach maturity slowly, giving us fruit which is soft and elegant, yet rich and full flavored. Deep ruby color with a crimson hue. Subtle nuances of cherry and mint aromas support an abundance of mulberry and plum fruit. A soft and supple bouquet of lush plum, cedar and hints of blackberry are framed with silky tannins. Blueberry essence builds on the back palate for a smooth finish."
