*Two Stars & Good Value* Abundant ripe-berry fruit is in charge every step of the way here, and never wavers even as a bit of late-arriving heat comes into play. The wine is fleshy and full with fine acidity affording it plenty of vigor and a very long finish, and, even if not long on refinement or polish, this is a deep and confident Zinfandel that is quite delicious even now. And it promises to stay around for a good many years into the future. (5/ 2013)
Green & Red has long been one of our favorite under-the-radar producers in California, but word seems to be spreading - the 2009 vintage of this sustainably farmed Zinfandel was named *Year's Best Zinfandel* by Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2012. The property is situated on the steep hills flanking Chiles Valley east of Napa, where red iron soils are striped with green serpentine, on a site originally planted to vineyards in the 1890's. Their "Chiles Canyon" Zin blends fruit from their three mountain estate vineyards, each of which sit at different elevations (ranging from 900-2000 ft) with different exposures. Aged in half French oak and half American oak for fourteen months, the combination yields a wine with zesty mountain fruit character accented by earth spice and savory herb notes that consistently over-delivers in quality for the price. With dark cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors punctuated by notes of expresso, clove and laurel, the delicious 2010 is recommended with wood-grilled grilled steak and veggies.
