(made from an equal blend of godello, dona blanca and treixadura; raised in stainless steel with no malo): Green-gold color. Pungent, mineral-laced scents of underripe orchard fruits, nectarine, citrus pith and violet, with a spicy overtone. Smooth, palate-coating pear and pit fruit flavors are braced by chalk and quinine nuances and show terrific energy. The finish lingers with floral and mineral notes. I had a brief image of mixing top-notch Chablis with a serious Condrieu when I drank this intriguing wine. (9/ 2012)
Produced from a blend of grapes in the Galician D.O. of Monterrei, just south of the city of Orense, proprietor José Luis Mateo's wine manages to cut a wide swath across the palate, showing impressive yellow fruited richness and depth of flavor while maintaining fresh flavors and a lively acidity on the palate. Grape varieties in this cuvee include dona blanca, treixadura verdello and others depending on the vintage, and come from various parcels amongst Mateo's 14 total hectares. For the first handful of vintages, Raúl Perez helped to make the wine (usually a good sign when you have Raúl signed on!). This is definitely a property to watch....
