The 2010 JC Vizcarra, also 100% Tempranillo, was aged 15 months in French and American oak. A truly great wine, it boasts a dense purple color along with notes of camphor, creme de cassis, licorice, damp earth and forest floor. The beautiful fragrance is accompanied by a wine with a full-bodied, opulent texture, and a voluptuous, luxurious mouthfeel as well as finish. Drink this beauty over the next 7-10 years. (100% tempranillo, aged for 13 months in French and American oak barrels, half new and half one year old): Bright ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry on the nose, with sexy Asian spice and rose notes adding complexity. Lively and deep, offering sweet red berry and bitter cherry flavors and an exotic star anise quality. The finish emphasizes sweet red fruits and lingers with very good spicy persistence. (9/ 2012)

"In the 1980's, Jose Manuel Vizacarra Aguado was among the pioneers in vineyard plantings in Ribera Del Duero. Since 1991, his son Juan Carlos Vizcarra has followed in his footsteps in the development and aging of fine wines. In 2007, the winery introduced a new gravity-driven winemaking facility, relying on natural pumping to produce intense aromas and soft tannins. Juan Carlos Vizcarra serves as the acting enologist, leading the analysis and development of 'microvinifications' of grapes from old vine plots." - (Drink Ribera. Drink Spain.) This is really nicely made, textbook 2010 RDD. Which is to say, that there is the richness, tannin structure and sense of extract of the 2009, but with more acidity and, I think, greater capacity for ageing. Don't be afraid to hang on to this one several years or longer! That said, it's ready for business now - loads of fruit, dark and red, combine with licorice on the nose, which then leads to a brightly fruited palate with hints of licorice, lovely minerality, and terrific balance. This is truly classy wine for the price, drinking great now but clearly with potential to greatly improve in bottle.

Red raspberry, red cherry, cassis, & spice with juicy, fresh fruit. Shows restraint in the use of oak, which is wonderful in a very young Ribera wine. Well-balanced acidity & fine tannins. Deliciously drinkable! Perfect for holiday parties!

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
