2011 Porter Creek "Old Vine" Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Pale gold. Smoky pear and peach pit on the fragrant nose, with subtle ginger and floral qualities adding complexity. Smooth and fleshy on the palate, offering sappy orchard fruit flavors and slow-building spiciness. Firm, focused and pure, with very good finishing power and lingering smokiness. I like this wine's blend of richness and finesse.
Porter Creek is a family-owned and operated winery located alongside Porter Creek, one of the Russian River's major tributaries. To showcase their unique hillside terroir, this father and son team focuses on Rhone and Burgundian varietals, which they farm organically to produce primarily vineyard-designated wines. Whille the estate "George's Hill" vineyard undergoes replanting, Porter Creek sourced from a nearby vineyard of similar old vine age for their 2011 "Old Vine" Chardonnay. In keeping with Porter Creek's sustainable farming philosophies, this vineyard is also 100% green farmed with only natural products used for fertility and pest control. The 2011 is a crisp, elegant style, showcasing bright green apple, citrus and and mineral aromas and flavors, with nice midpalate richness. Superb acid structure balances its weight effortlessly, driving towards a clean, focused finish.
