This 2008 vintage possesses a citrus and mineral bouquet that reveals notes of pear, green apple, melon and lightly toasted oak. On the palate the wine is lively and complex with flavors that include pear, fresh apple, limestone and balanced with toasty oak. It has a long, expansive finish that ends with just the right amount of acidity to make this the perfect complement to many types of cuisine.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting Marimar Torres you would come away remembering one thing, how she exudes class. She does it in such an effortless way, without pretention or snobbery, and somehow that same feel gets personified in her wines. What is in the bottle here, and furthermore in all of the Marimar Estate wines, is not about bombast or trendiness but about congruent parts all coming together seamlessly and without effort. The 2008 Marimar Estate "La Masia-Don Miguel Vineyard" Russian River Chardonnay is a wine that is not for the Rombauer/bigger is better set but more for people that like there Chardonnays to champion balance above all else, fans of Macon and Pouilly-Fuisse should take note here. The nose balances the subtle toast of new oak barrels, around a third new oak is used here, with underlying granite like minerality, sandalwood and citrus oil. Bright and sassy on entry this snowballs richness, earth and texture as it goes along to the dry, yet generous finish of preserved lemon and toasted oats. Flavors of Clementines, graham cracker, papaya and hazelnut pop up along the way and meld seamlessly into the medium weighted frame. A poised and yes, classy, wine for twenty dollars.

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. Alexander Valley/Russian River

- Although technically part of Sonoma Valley, the Alexander Valley AVA acts as a gateway to neighboring Napa to the east and Mendocino to the north. It is a sprawling appellation, with pockets of distinct microclimates and soils, and as such, is home to variety of wine grapes and styles. Nearly everything grows in the Alexander Valley, though cabernet and chardonnay are the most widely planted grapes. The Russian River Valley lies to the west of Alexander Valley, and is marked by much cooler temperatures and frequently heavy fog. The chardonnays and pinot noirs from here are some of the state's finest and most-sought after. Experiments with gewürztraminer and sparkling wine look promising as well.
