2004 York Creek Vineyards Estate Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $50)

Located on the approximately 125 acres on Spring Mountain, atop the Mayacamas crest that separates the Napa and Sonoma valleys, York Creek farms fifteen different grape varieties in nearly fifty individually named blocks planted amid thick forest. The Estate Cabernet is their flagship, made from a blend of fruit from many of their diverse vineyard blocks in a Bordeaux-like style with the addition of small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot and aged in French oak. It is an elegant wine, exhibiting classic "mountain" character in the form of concentrated dark fruit, firm tannins, and nuances of mineral and earth, and that only gets better with age.

A deal like this one does not come along very often. A nearly ten year old Napa Cab direct from the winery. I had this 2004 York Creek Cabernet Sauvignon last night with dinner and was just astonished at how good it was. Beautifully integrated oak with just a hint of vanilla and spice. Classic blackberry and cassis notes. Generous fruit, sweet and ripe, but with plenty of underlying structure. Drinking beautifully now this wine should continue to shine for at least another 3 to 5 years and perhaps another ten. Buy this one in lots of 6 to 12 and add it to your cellar for near term drinking. You won't regret it.

Recently I was sitting at my desk thinking about some of the wines I’ve had from what I believe to be truly great wineries in the fine state of California. One wine kept popping into my head which was the Estate Cab from York Creek. The saddest part is that I hadn’t carried the wine for a couple of years due to lack of distribution. So I picked up the phone and made a call, long story short James Beard Award winner, beer icon, owner of York Creek Vineyards and an all around great man Fritz Maytag was at my desk a couple of weeks later showing me the lineup from his estate high upon Spring Mountain. From that meeting a fruitful business relationship developed which began with us selling almost 300 cases of the highly touted 2007 Estate Cabernet. Next in line is the 2004 Estate Cabernet which we think you’re going to like as much if not more than the 2007. I love the 2004 vintage for producers like Fritz. The wines are wonderfully structured with vibrant blue and black fruit flavors and persistent yet balanced tannins. This wine shows those qualities in spades with extra layers of subtle fern, eucalyptus and sandalwood flavors and a depth of cassis toned fruit that belies its age. This is wonderful to drink now but is going to continue to get better with 3-6 more years in the cellar. Simply put this is the best value in Napa Valley Cabernet we are going to have this Holiday Season.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
