Peay is one of our favorite California cool climate producers, making phenomenal Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah from their estate vineyards on the far western end of the Sonoma Coast, way out on the fringes of where grapes ripen. Cep is their label devoted to entry level wines made with barrel selections from their estate vineyard and Vanessa Wong's same impeccable attention to detail. Beautifully balanced, they're a great introduction to Peay's filigreed, food-friendly, ageworthy style. In 2010 the winery chose not to make their famed Les Titans Syrah, just the La Bruma, and so much of the fruit came from lots that usually go into Les Titans, making this an incredible steal at half the price of that wine. When asked to describe the 2010 Cep Syrah, Andy Peay told us: "This is a very cool site for Syrah, perhaps the coldest in the New World or the world. That is responsible for the profile of this Syrah--it has white pepper, salumi, garrigue, meat, floral/lavender notes. 2010 was a very cold vintage and we picked in November with the grapes showing superb maturity at very low brix. The acidity is brisk and a perfect complement for cutting through the fats of lamb and beef that are ideal for cool climate Syrah."
