2011 Sipun Zlahtina Island of Krk

SKU #1114547 Wine Enthusiast

Abundant lavender and jasmine touches meld with lemon peel and waxy lanolin notes on this richly textured, slightly viscous white wine. Lemony and fresh on the palate, with brisk acidity, it finishes with a long, delicate touch of hazelnut oil. (12/ 2012)

K&L Notes

100% Zlahtina, producer: Sipun (pronouned "shee-poon"), appellation: Otok Krk (pronounced Oh-talk Kirk), Karst limestone soil. From the importer's website: "For thousands of years, humans have relaxed on the Mediterranean island paradise of Krk, and drank its wines. Once planted to 250,000 hectares of vineyards, today there are just 250; 95% of which are planted to the native white varietal Zlahtina. Vigneron Ivica Dobincic is the biggest champion of this grape, and is actively re-introducing other varietals as well." The bright red rose on the label is one of the Sipun- the wild roses that dot the hillsides on the island. "Easy-going, relaxed, breezy: the sort of wine best sipped lazily with briny hors d'oeuvres. Sipun is charming, with subtle peach, gardenia, and sea air notes giving a savory quality as well; balanced, mineral and low enough acid to make it gulpable." Lovely alone, it would also pair well with hard cheeses, fish, herb-infused dishes, and roast chicken.
