Chateau des Jacques’s 2010 Moulin-a-Vent La Roche seems to live up to its name with a stony undertone and slightly more austere overall impression than its immediate siblings, and this includes pungent hints of dill and carrot-top which suggest a less-ripe element. Salted meat juices dominate over fresh red berries, but there is a brightness and mouthwatering juiciness to the finish – arguably borne of this site’s, in point of fact, higher clay content than its neighbors’ and hence greater water- and eventual acid-retention – that offers welcome counterpoint to the stoniness and suggests a handsomely and athletically lean wine whose energies will not dissipate for 4-6 years.
