"3-D" is the name for Brewer-Clifton's own "ground to glass" production, from a sandy loam vineyard block leased from the Davidson family that Steve Clifton and his team planted to five selections of Chardonnay (4, 76, Hyde, Mount Eden and Wente). 2010 is the second vintage of this wine, a vibrant and aromatic expression of Sta Rita Hills, with a lovely balance of richness, texture, and focus. Only 288 cases were produced and with all the positive critical buzz it has received already, we imagine it will not be on our shelves for long. Writing Wine Advocate, Antonio Galloni noted of the Brewer-Clifton's 2010 Chardonnays: "The 2010s are beautiful, transparent wines that capture the essence of the vintage and their respective sites. The single-vineyard wines can be hard to track down, but to tell the truth, I am increasingly drawn to the straight appellation Chardonnay and Pinot, as they are less expensive, relatively easy to find and full of personality." My introduction to this remarkable wine was a first for me. I tasted the 2010 Brewer Clifton "3D" Santa Rita Hills Chardonnay while standing in the vineyard, my feet in the same soil that grew the grapes that made the wine in my glass. It was a powerful experience, made all the more memorable by the quality of the wine. Intensely mineral in expression yet textured and rich with extraordinary length and persistence. Crisp apple and pear notes with a light toast from the barrel aging. A perfect example of some of the best Chardonnay being produced in the Santa Rita Hills AVA today.

Is this a 3D movie site? Nope! The Davidson family property is the source of this lovely fruit, and when the vineayrds were first planted, there were 3 family members living there. Hence, 3D! Apple, citrus, spicy, herbal, pear, tropical fruit and mineral, with a very palpable texture from the stem inclusion in fermentation. Gorgeous plush fruit with medium plus acidity and great balance.

This wine is all about texture. The creamy and weighty yet focused and balanced palate blew me away even after the glass was finished. Clean tropical fruit, mild toast, and citrus notes on the finish really compliment the vibrant acidity throughout. This bottle will continue to develop for some time.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. - Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
