Long-time readers know d’Aurilhac is one of my favorite under-the-radar Bordeaux in top vintages. This impressively made Medoc offers a lot of quality for its price. The 2009 reveals copious black cherry, black currant, earth, and spice notes intertwined with a hint of background oak. A luscious texture, a succulent style, and a juicy, long finish suggest it will drink well for 5-7 years. (4/ 2010)

From Jancis Robinson: "Blackish crimson. Harmonious, quite zesty nose. Lots of acidity but lots of ripe fruit too. Quite a delicate balance. Not one of the most convincing but, young, it should please." (04/2010)

Another great value 2009. Almost a 50/50 blend of Cabernet and Merlot with a just a bit Petit Verdot and Cab Franc. The nose is ripe with lots of cassis and plum and a touch of oak spice. The palate is lush and rich, with tons of dark fruit and spice. There is plenty of structure, though, it’s just that the tannins and acidity are taking a back seat to the rich fruit right now, which means this wine should age well.

Yet, another Bordeaux property that I have never seen imported to the USA with all my vast years [don’t believe some my colleagues that I go back to the turn of the last century and way beyond in regards to this aspect] of wine retail. In great vintages as `09, you purchase wines as such, knowing that they will mature near-term and that you will be able to keep your hands off of the great wines from the Classified Growths, and Grand to Premier Crus that you have in your collection for later consumption on special occasions. Deep ruby in color, this lush, ripe, opulent Gem is loaded with cassis, currants and a not-over-the-top jammy tone. Broad and viscous, this beauty offers a deep, sweet fruit core of currants and blackberries, integrated tannins, and a warm, long, fairly complex finish. Rusty was jumping up and down over this Gem, and has anointed it our house red for the next five years. A great value! 14.0% ABV

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
