Oaky, butterscotch scents pour forth from this orange-colored wine. Flavors center around nutty, orangey nuances, with the wood notes reassserting themselves on the finish. The 18% alcohol is barely noticeable in this intense and unique dessert wine that bears a resemblance to some sherries and tawnies. (12/ 1999)
A distinctive, amber-colored wine, with Madeira-like nuttiness, a smooth texture and a set of spicy orange aromas and flavors that linger on the finish. Well made and elegant. (11/ 1991)
Gold Medal/Best in Class winner in the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition! The current release of Merryvale's unique barrel-aged "Antigua" is 100% Muscat de Frontignan from vintages 1970 to 1983, 1992 to 1994. After being fortified with fine pot-still brandy, it is aged in French oak barrels and tanks for an average of eleven years. With 11% residual sugar and 18% abv, this is a distinctive sweet fortified wine, with complex nutty and candied orange peel aromas and flavors, accented by creamy vanilla and caramel from oak ageing. It's like a cross between Muscat de Beaumes de Venise and Madeira - a charming stickie to enjoy with pumpkin pie or carrot cake.
