Orin Swift's "D66" blends Grenache with Syrah and Carignan for a Rhone-style offering that is full-bodied and packed with fruit, just like what you would expect from this popular Napa Valley-based producer, whose "Prisoner" Zin blend is a practically a local celebrity. Though "D66" comes from the Cotes Calalanes in Southwest France, it could easily be pegged for Napa in a blind tasting with its abundance of saturated black cherry, pomegranate, and strawberry aromas and flavors, layered with toasty vanilla and baking spices. Aged for eighteen months in 30% new French oak, followed by five months in bottle prior to release, this demands a big, hearty meal. Braised short ribs or pork belly stew, perhaps.
