2004 Michel Brégeon "Sur Lie Réserve" Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Michel Brégeon is an ardent champion of the Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine terroir. All of his vineyard plantings feature inclusion of gabbro soils and rock, which are rare in vineyard land and were originally formed volcanically on the ocean floor. Brégeon ages his wines in glass-lined cuves on the lees for extended periods of time, and they still retain the freshness for which the region is known. The grapes in this bottling were sourced from 50 year old vines, and the wine was bottled in February 2012 after boasting 89 months of aging on its lees.

Opened this with Thanksgiving dinner, that's right, no turkey this year, but it worked beautifully with prawns quickly sauteed in garlic, parsley, red pepper flakes, a dash of Cointreau, pinch of sea salt, and a cup of the same wine. Took ten minutes tops, so there was plenty of quality time to enjoy family and friends without watching the hot oven all day. Anyway, old vine Melon de Bourgogne from the Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine terroir is truly one of the underrated wines of the world, and given eight years to pillow talk sur lie contributed sumptuous notes of citrus fruit, cut hay, white flowers, almonds and brioche. The prawns almost jumped off the plate with joy!

Melon de Bourgogne

- A white wine grape that originated in Burgundy, Melon de Bourgogne has, sadly, essentially vanished from that region. But fans of the varietal need not despair; its virtual disappearance from this pricy zip code has not prevented it from thriving in the Loire Valley, where it is made into the affordable, zippy, mineral, citrusy wines of Muscadet that pair so well with oysters.
