Big and rich in the Joly style, this has a velvety texture and fragrant dimension of flavor. For all its weight, the wine remains vibrant and tense, feeling muscular rather than opulent. It finishes with complex aromas and long, energetic length, balancing its components superbly. (4/ 2011)
A distinctive white, with bright Jonagold apple, chamomile, jasmine, white tea and salted butter notes that stay tightly wound through the focused finish. Drink now through 2016. (11/ 2011)
Joly’s 2008 Savennieres Coulee de Serrant is a slightly brighter shade of gold than its two stable mates. A fascinating nose of oceanic salinity and alkalinity; citrus oils, celery seed, and hints of poultry and shellfish stock leads to a palate of intense phenolic concentration, with chewy fruit skin and bitter citrus rind... Coulée de Serrant is a small AOC located within Savennières and is only about 17 acres in size. Originally planted by Cistercian monks back in 1130 the average vine age is between 35-40 years of age with the oldest being around 80 years old. The dense red schist soils give this wine its renowned concentration, structure and power. The winery converted over to biodynamic farming back in 1980, before it was so hip, and they are committed to bottling a natural "wine-of-place". This is one of the most powerful wines of the world. Cellar for 10+ years or decant vigorously for a few hours. From Jancis Robinson: "Light honey colour. Deep flavour with some volcanic notes somehow - explosive! Great stuff. There really is a lot buried in here. Bravo! Great intensity. Long." (11/2011)
