2006 Bodegas Casa Juan Señor de Lesmos Crianza Rioja

SKU #1112150

There is a wonderful element of whimsy and joy at this tiny, family bodega located in Laguardia. The elephant logo, the on site African art museum, as well as the name (there is no Señor de Lesmos, as it turns out) all speak to the family's joie de vivre and sense of humor. There is nothing funny about the quality of these wines, though. All estate fruit, hand-harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture, and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the wine shows a rather Burgundian nose of cherries and plums, opening to reveal a hint of sandalwood that leads to a wonderful palate that opens with tangy cherry flavors that are persistent and presented on an elegantly textured frame. Terrific acidity and a lasting finish. One could not ask for much more in a classically styled Rioja Crianza.

Such an outstanding value in classic earthy, rustic Rioja. This wine is driven by spicy red fruits, dusty earth, stones and just a hint of "funkiness" but only the good kind! The fact that we buy this wine direct from the property means that you get it for a crazy good price! Try this with lamb Kabobs on the grill.

In order to get the lowest prices for our customers we have for quite a few years now been buying directly from producers in France and in Italy. We have only recently however, extended this direct import program to our Spanish wines, and the efforts of Joe Manekin, our Spanish buyer, are really starting to pay off. Take for example, the 2006 Bodegas Casa Juan Senor De Lesmos Crianza Rioja. A traditionally styled Tempranillo blend at a jaw dropping price of $12.99. If you are a fan of Rioja buy this one by the case. If you have never enjoyed a wine from this historic region, then you have no excuse not to try it at this price. You'll be glad you did.

If you are looking for the best value in red wine at K&L you have found it. This is even better than the great 2005 and I had to buy another case for my cellar and at the rate we are going through it I will need to buy another before it is gone. This rich, earthy, old school Rioja has way to much flavor, power and balance to come in at under $20. If you like Rioja, buy, buy, buy!!!!

Brilliant wine, fresh and bright fruit, cherries and resberries, good intensity, and more length than it ought to have. This Crianza would make a great pairing for lamb, burgers, or Tuesday night.

Joe Manekin, our Spanish Wine Buyer, made an absolutely incredible wine producer discovery on his most recent wine buying trip to Spain with the Riojas from Senor de Lesmos. This 2006 Crianza has to be one of the most remarkable Riojas that I have ever tasted. Produced from hand-harvested estate fruit and fermented with its own native yeast, this high profiled, opulent ly aromatic Gem has a pure essence of fruit on the nose and across the palate. Rich, broad, viscous, remarkably complex, incredibly structured, well-integrated Gem offers tons of character and flavor with dried rose petal to spicy anise to white pepper qualities, and a finish that is full and complete. Rusty has told me that this Gem may be one of the most remarkable Riojas that we have ever experienced and we need to buy as many cases as we can afford. What’s the price??? Amazing! 13.0ABV
Drink from 2012 to 2020

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
