2010 Antica Napa Valley Chardonnay

The 2010 Chardonnay is quite a bit brighter and more focused than the 2009. Lemon peel, flowers, spices and crushed rocks are some of the notes that flow from this taut, mineral-driven wine. Hints of lemon, mint and jasmine reappear on the crisp, delineated finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Antica, the Antinori family’s outpost on Atlas Peak. Even though Antinori has been involved with this property since the late 1980s, these are essentially the first wines the family has made in its own facility. The Chardonnay is aged in 30-33% new barrels, sees batonnage for the first three months and undergoes partial malolactic fermentation. (12/ 2011)

A big improvement over the ’09, this shows increased mastery of the grapes, which come from the estate on Atlas Peak. Fashioned in the Burgundian style, this has some new oak and plenty of sur lie character, with rich, ripe flavors of pineapple, golden mango and yellow apricot and firm minerality. Drink now with lobsters, crabs, scallops and similar rich fare. (8/ 2012)

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine.
