The family has been there making wines for over 150 years, and when it comes to Amarone, they are widely regarded as the pioneers of the dry red style which they refined and developed back in the early 1950's.

One doesn't usually get to taste much in the way of Old Amarone, but thanks to Bertani's late release program and their incredible depth of stock you can get a direct from the winery example of classic Amarone. This wine has layers of complexity, and after 33 years a the sweet baby fat has dropped away to reveal an extraordinarily complex wine that no longer is left to the cheese course, this is a main course wine for beef or lamb. Take advantage of this stupendous deal, you'll be blown away.

This historic firm was founded in 1857 at Quinto di Valpentena by brothers Giovanbattista and Gaetano Bertani. This Recioto, among the world longest-lived wines, owes its strength and power from the same method used to make the dry Amarone (grapes picked at optimal ripeness and dried on straw mats in special outbuildings, then pressed and fermented). In this case, however, the resulting wine stops its fermentation early thereby preserving its sweetness. At the table it acts like your finest vintage port, though with less brut alcoholic strength and a more pronounced fruitcake/raisin aroma. This is also tremendous with old and bleu cheeses, some dried fruit, toasted nuts and someone special. This 1980 is intense garnet red with a slightly orange rim, a soft palate with sweet tannins, good acidity and a long satisfying finish.
