 *Two Stars* Rich, well-defined and very lively with deep aromas of fresh figs, herbs and a bare kiss of oak, this carefully crafted wine is both rich and well-polished with plentiful varietal fruit and exemplary balance. Its mouth-watering acidity enlivens and lengthens without ever seeming at all intrusive, and there is a structural seamlessness about the wine that simply sets it apart.  Very pale green-tinged yellow. Delicate aromas of citrus zest, graphite, lavender and dusty minerals. At once supple and bracing, with dense but penetrating flavors of lemon, tangerine and quinine. Very concentrated, extract-rich sauvignon with impressive palate presence. The bracing, tactile finish offers a refreshingly bitter quality and an impression of strong extract.  (5/ 2012)

 There is plenty of intensity in the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc McGinley. This is an especially broad-shouldered, full-bodied Sauvignon with serious depth and a layered personality that is highly appealing. Mint, sage and white peaches wrap around the finish. The personality of the year comes through loud and clear. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Ojai and proprietor Adam Tolmach... The Ojai wines remain exceedingly fairly priced considering the quality and painstaking effort that goes into every bottle."  (8/ 2012)

 Strong notes of lemongrass and pineapple jam mark this Sauvignon Blanc. It has a nice cut of acidity. While it’s not particularly subtle, this is ready to drink now as a cocktail.  (8/ 2012)

On a recent trip down the Central Coast I was lucky enough to get an appointment at Ojai Vineyards. Tucked away in a beautiful spot in the town of the same name it would be easy to overlook the winery being that there is no advertising, no ballyhoo, heck there isn’t even a sign on their gate letting you know where they are. But once you are there it becomes readily apparent the level of attention and detail that is put into all of their wines. A perfect example of this is the 2010 Ojai "McGinley Vineyard" Santa Ynez Valley Sauvignon Blanc. 2010 was a cooler vintage in the Santa Ynez Valley and the wine shows that vintage character with its brisk acidity and pleasing, varietal muskiness. Fermented in old oak barrels this is allowed to come along slowly and frame the truly complex flavors that are rarely found in today’s Domestic Sauvignon Blancs. Quince, musk, lime, chalk passion fruit and Meyer lemon flavors swirl around the palate, all noticeable in their own right but meshed so tightly that they all become a sort of new flavor: Ojai “McGinley” Sauvignon Blanc. The finish is long and lasting and will certainly make you mouth water and ask for simple, nor not so simple salads, roast chicken or pork tenderloin. This is a rare find in Sauvignon Blanc that will hold up with the best in the world.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
