Dark red. Incredibly fragrant nose offers intense scents of raspberry, blackberry and kirsch underscored by a vibrant mineral tone. Lush, creamy and very sweet, with strong red and dark fruit flavors, exotic spice accents and a smooth, velour-like texture. Whatever tannins this might have are completely absorbed by the deep, concentrated fruit. Finishes very sweet, with exceptional length and bright mineral lift. (1/ 2007)
Very round and supple up front, with raspberry and fig fruit caressed by silky tannins. Long finish shows kirsch, mineral, graphite and dark chocolate hints. Really stretches out, with the structure becoming more evident as it tightens up in the glass. Needs cellaring to let it put on all its weight. Best from 2008 through 2024 (11/ 2006)
The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes has a saturated dark ruby/purple color and the tell-tale black raspberry, blueberry, and cassis notes intermixed with black truffle and floral notes. Moderately firm tannins give it a more structured feel than the regular bottling and the wine again shares wonderful purity, texture, and length. This is another beauty that should hit its peak in 2-4 years and last for 15 or more. (2/ 2007)
