***Three Stars*** A tip of the hat goes to Ojai Vineyard for their very successful lot of 2006 Syrahs, and the one from the Presidio Vineyard is our pick of the bunch. It is complex and wonderfully layered with classic elements of pepper, cured meat, minerals, tobacco and violets as adjuncts to its wonderfully pure fruit, and it is as deep and well-balanced as Syrah is likely to get. Its exceptionally long finish is firmed by perfectly placed tannins, and those lucky enough to find a few bottles should expect it to improve for a good many years.

The 2006 Syrah Presidio is super-impressive. An exciting array of dark fruit, leather, spices and licorice emerges from the glass in this vibrant, powerful wine. The Presidio possesses gorgeous depth and complexity, with hints of tobacco, leather, licorice and cedar that add further nuance on the muscular finish. Presidio is a biodynamically farmed vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

An interesting new bottling from Ojai. Inky black and utterly dry, it was grown in a very cool site west of the Santa Rita Hills boundary. The wine is high in both tannins and acids, giving it great structure, while sweet, smoky oak adds softening notes to the pure blackberry and black currant fruit flavors. Compelling. Drink now-2014.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Inky ruby. Complex, intensely perfumed bouquet of raspberry and cherry liqueur, fresh flowers, spicecake and candied licorice. Supple and sweet, with impressive depth and energy to its red fruit flavors. Picks up a darker blackcurrant note with air and finishes with impressive power and assertive florality. This wine should age slowly and gracefully.
