The 2008 Ferrer/Bobet is a vibrant offering with an expressive nose of cedar, spicy black fruits, exotic spices, and lavender. Only time will tell whether the 2009 is better than this beauty. Ferrer/Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. No expense has been spared in the construction of a magnificent winery and in the planting of the vineyards. Sergi Ferrer-Salat is a young pharmaceutical tycoon with apparently a much greater interest in fine wine than drugs, while his partner Raul Bobet was the long-time winemaker at Torres. Ferrer-Salat makes it clear that his goal is to make the greatest wine possible without regard to whether he makes money. I'm not sure if Bobet would totally agree, but it appears that he is up for the challenge. (5/ 2011)
Based on old-vine cariñena--some more than a century old--this contrasts liqueur-like fruit and tart notes. It’s powerful, filling every corner of the mouth with notes of ripe blackberries and sour cherries. A wine to cellar at least four years. (2/ 2012)
Racy and elegant, this red delivers cherry, berry, mineral and smoke flavors in a light-bodied texture with focus and drive. Light tannins and lively acidity frame the vibrant fruit. (5/ 2012)
This blend of old vine Garnacha and Cariñena is delicious, truly some terrific winemaking from very good fruit in this once again exciting, dynamic wine region. Spicy and sweet mixed berry and red fruit aromas show discreet barrel notes. On the palate, the wine is rich (to be expected from this Mediterranean growing area!) and has a lovely texture - mouth filling and with very fine tannins. Surprisingly fresh acidity balances out the intensity and richness of the fruit. While it's delicious now, this wine should have a great future ahead of it, with the potential to improve in bottle for at least 7-8 years.
