2010 Luis Pato Vinas Velhas White Beiras
Bical, Cerceal, Sercialinho. Bical on clay-limestone soil. Cerceal and Sercialinho on sandy soil. Unoaked. Cedary citrus on the nose and o n the palate. A creamy texture opening up to lemon and apricot fruit with that cedary character on the aftertaste. Terrific freshness and energy. Just a baby. 17/20 points.
Luis Pato, aka "Senhor Baga" for his mastery of the tough to tame red Baga, is something of a Portuguese legend. He makes incredible, age worthy but initially somewhat hard red wines, as well as a delicious sparkler from the Maria Gomes grape which many of our customers have enjoyed. This white is composed of 50% Bical, 30% Sercial, and 20% Sercialinho (a hybrid grape consisting of Arinto and Alvarinho) and is very mineral, elegant, and dare I say Burgundian. Creamy, rounded citrus aromas, with a hint of Chablis-like minerality lead to a palate consistent with all of those notes. The wine shows amazing texture and will develop more complexity with some bottle age as well. Intriguing stuff, and a great value in ageworthy, serious white wine.
