You won't find a wine like this outside Galicia. It's not just the wild energy, the mash-up of stemmy greenness with dark fruit ripeness. You can find that in a great Chambolle. It's more the contrast of floral and meaty scents, as if violets were pressed into chorizo. And the tannins, as black as carbon, integrating with the fruit into a dark-lashed beauty. (10/ 2011)
The unoaked 2009 Gabo do Xil is a 100% Mencia from Valdeorras. It displays an excellent perfume of Asian spices and wild black raspberry aromas and flavors. Dry and savory on the palate, it will drink nicely for 3-4 years, is an outstanding value, and a terrific introduction to the Mencia grape. (6/ 2011)
From the remote Galician countryside of Spain comes this Mencía-based wine. It is a recent effort from one of Spain's best winemakers and owner of Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez. Toasty dark fruit aromas lead to flavors of deep, teeth-staining dark cherry and blackberry fruit. Nuances of roasted coffee and dark chocolate play a supporting role on the broad, mouth filling palate.
