 *Editors' Choice* This is a terrific Merlot, offering structure and balance (hallmarks of all Seven Hills wines) along with rich fruits, accented with earth and herb. There is lovely density and texture at work here, plenty of black cherry fruit, and a gentle hint of composted earth.  (6/ 2013)

 This spicy, peppery style weaves a tomato leaf note through the dark berry and licorice flavors. Not weighty, exhibiting a lively feel to the finish. Drink now through 2015. (Web-2013)

Fruit for this Seven HIlls Merlot is sourced from several sub-appelltions of Columbia Valley. It keeps a keen eye on the expression of the varietal in Washington State with balanced acidity and tannins and good overall structure. Red cherry and currant introduce themselves on the nose with a touch of vanilla and reverberate on the palate with baking spices, chocolate, and raspberry to lead into a bright finish. The 2009 vintage garnered 91 points from Wine Spectator.

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.

It's interesting to note that Washington's prime wine regions are located at 46° north, along the same latitude as the legendary French wine districts of Bordeaux and Burgundy. During the summer, Washington averages more than two hours more sunlight each day compared to California.
