2010 Skouras Saint George (Agiorgitiko) Nemea

SKU #1107793 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2010 Saint George is an entry level Agiorgitiko (spelled by Skouras in an alternative transliteration as 'Aghiorghitiko'). This is always a solid buy, consistent, with elegance and purity, although never with much concentration or power. It is quite attractive this year as well. The silky texture, a product of the acidity, is quite sensual and the wine is fragrant and a pleasure just to smell. Its graceful mid-palate is part of its impeccable balance, along with the subtle tannins. The cherry nuances are cut by the acidity nicely. It doesnít develop much and isnít going anywhere, but for an early maturing, entry level wine it is quite charming, drinking beautifully now and at its best in the short term. It probably is at peak this year. Drink now-2015. This is a very nice lineup from Skouras this issue. The best news is that there are a lot of nice values. (4/ 2012)

Wine & Spirits

An easy-going introduction to Nemean reds, this is cherry-fruity with abundant oak spice. Give it a slight chill for a backyard barbecue. (8/ 2012)

Wine Spectator

Firm and juicy, with a tannic grip to the crisp dried berry and cherry flavors, which feature plenty of rich, dark chocolate accents. Finishes with red plum and mineral notes. Drink now through 2016. (11/ 2012)

K&L Notes

The color is bright, deep crimson. The nose reveals aromas of blackberries, black raspberries and ripe strawberries with just a touch of anise and spices such as clove and cinnamon. It is a medium bodied wine with graceful texture, balanced acidity and very ripe elegant tannins. The finish is moderately long, full of red fruits with a touch of sweet vanilla and black pepper.

Agiorgitiko, also known as St George, is the most planted red grape varietal in Greece, traditionally grown in the Nemea region of the Peloponese. Plummy and spicy, with a medium body, this wine is best with grilled chicken dishes, or the traditional charred and smoked eggplant dip, baba ganoush.

Greece

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
