The 2005 Monte Real Reserva is pure Tempranillo that is raised in American oak for 24 to 30 months. It has a traditional, singed leather bouquet with muted earthy aromas and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with a pepper-tinged entry. It is underpinned by fine tannins and is blessed with a refined, harmonious leather and balsamic-tinged finish that will please lovers of 'classic' Rioja. Drink now-2018. (8/ 2012)
Bodegas Riojanas is more than a century old, family-owned winery and one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Rioja. Stylistically, Monte Real is the bolder, riper sibling of Viña Albina. From the great 2005 vintage, this is layered and expressive in traditional Rioja form as red fruit aromas and flavors with darker fruit undertones mingle with leather and savory notes. It has lively acidity on the palate and exhibits supreme balance overall. 100% Tempranillo.
