2011 Mt. Beautiful Pinot Noir Cheviot Hills New Zealand

SKU #1107161

Winemaker's Notes: "This complex, deep ruby coloured Pinot Noir is fragrant with dried flowers and forest floor aromas. On the palate it shows ripe blackberry fruit with a hint of exotic spice and fine, savoury tannins. Full-bodied and strongly structured, this wine is already drinking well, but will gain further structure and develop beautifully with cellaring over the next three years." Tech Info: "The fruit for this Pinot Noir was de-stemmed and gravity fed to tank. Blocks were fermented separately, but as blends of different clones to add complexity and aid integration of flavors. Ten days of cold soaking were followed by a fast ferment, with plunging twice a day to achieve an aromatic wine with good tannin stability. The wine was then aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new."

A new producer from the exciting little area of Cheviot Hills in North Canterbury on New Zealand's South Island close to the east coast. Exceptionally good Pinot for this price. Raspberry, dark cherry and a touch of vanilla. Very floral with some attractive rose petal notes. The wine has a pure brightness and very fine polished tannins. Very drinkable (perhaps too drinkable). A great every day pinot with real character and finesse. A top value in NZ Pinot.

This is a new addition to our growing Kiwi portfolio and without a doubt, one you should try. The nose shows raspberry, dark cherry, plum, earth, Asian spices, forest floor and dried orange peel. On the palate these flavors combine with juicy acidity and fine silky tannins that form one lovely Pinot Noir with superb balance and length.

Varietal:

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
Country:

New Zealand

- A Southern Pacific island 1,000 miles from the nearest land-mass (Australia), New Zealand has a maritime climate, suitable for wine production of excellent quality. For better or worse, this was discovered by New Zealand agriculturalists relatively recently (end of the 20th century), thus the wine industry is virtually brand new. Although most influenced by Australian academia, New Zealand's wine industry has begun to adopt many European and California viticultural and enological practices. Although the New Zealand wine biz is known most for its Sauvignon Blanc, the most planted variety is Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir gaining in popularity.
