This is a great showing for Conterno's 1999 Barolo Riserva Granbussia. A deeply-flavored, structured wine, it offers expressive aromatics and layers of sweet black cherries, roses and tar in a powerful, intense style. It needs at least a few additional years of cellaring for the oak to soften, but it is a terrific effort. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024. (5/ 2008)
Medium red. Pure but reticent aromas of minerals and spices, with a deep woodsy sweetness. Then dense, lush and silky but youthfully backward. This powerfully minerally, spicy wine boasts fruit of steel. Finishes with big, broad, strong tannins and great length and grip. A classic Barolo in need of a good decade of additional cellaring. (11/ 2002)
Offers sweet berry and fresh mushroom, with hints of fresh herbs and green coffee bean. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and aftertaste of berry and cherry.—'99 Piedmont blind retrospective (2009). Best after 2012. 770 cases made. –JS . (1/ 2009)
