The talent of a winemaker really shines when it comes to the skill in blending to produce a finished wine that is greater than the sum of its parts. Ridge Vineyards' Three Valleys is this form of winemaking - arguably the "real" form of winemaking - at its finest. Fruit for the 2010 blend was hand-selected from seven different Sonoma vineyards. Though the wine's composition may vary from vintage to vintage, it is always driven by Zinfandel's varietal character, the foundation of the blend. Old-vine Carignagne builds upon this plummy, generous foundation with bright red fruit notes and zesty acidity. It gets its darker fruit notes, spice, and tannin from the Petite Sirah and Syrah.Tiny amounts of Grenache and Alicante Bouchet add just a touch of briar-patch to the mix for a blend that is overall open-knit, punchy, and exceedingly delicious with just the right amount of oak spice. It shows off the cool character of the 2010 vintage in the form of fresh and bright red berry notes upfront and backed by perfume of flowering herbs and cracked pepper. The tannins are lithe and elegant, the oak nicely integrated, and the wine finishes with complex array of fruit, spice, and earth notes that linger through a long finish. Composition: 72% Zinfandel, 12% Carignane, 12% Petite Sirah, 2% Syrah, 1% Grenache, 1% Alicante Bouchet.
