2010 Chante Cigale "Vieilles Vignes" Côtes du Rhône

Chante Cigale's Côtes du Rhône is sourced from a vineyard near Rasteau, 15 km north of Chateauneuf du Pape. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Carignane, and 10% Syrah from 50-year-old vines is a very hand-made treatment of what is normally made as bulk wine. The wine is aged in 30% oak and 70% steel before being bottled. Red fruit on the nose introduces spicy black cherry and berry flavors on the palate with earthy spice and minerality. Firm tannins echo black currant fruit on a substantial finish. 14.5% abv.

Grenache-driven (70%), with the balance being Carignane and Syrah, this deeply colored Gem represents what this wonderful vintage is all about: depth, structure, and complexity. Produced mostly from grapes grown from a vineyard near the village of Rasteau, this superb Gem offers upfront cranberry to boysenberry fruit with white pepper undertones, combined with a meaty, almost CDP game-like note and slate-like minerality presentation. The finish is full, with a wonderful firmness and depth of flavor. According to Rusty, this Gem will be one of our house reds for the month.

Alexandre Favier took over the active reins of Chante Cigale from his father at the ripe old age of twenty, and has over the last decade achieved great success with both his classic Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines and pleasing, reliable Côtes-du-Rhônes. The Vielle Vignes cuvée was first created in 1996, with vines averaging 50 years of age, from fruit harvested in the Plan de Dieu situated between Cairanne and Rasteau. An attractive, supple blend of Grenache, Carignan and Syrah from a great vintage, this versatile wine will accompany a range of cuisines from Mediterranean to Moroccan.

A new offering from one of our favorite Rhone producers. This wine is made just 15km north of CNDP and with vines that are 50 years old. Those are two fact I don't expect to find in $13 wine. The palate is bright and lush with dark fruit, nice structure from the vintage, a real value.
