Winemaker Kevin Kelley of Salinia has nailed it again, with his "MIX," a field blend dominated by Southern Rhone varietals grown biodynamically at Mendocino's Sun Hawk Farms. The grapes--Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Counoise, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Picpoul and Muscat-- are not only grown together, but they're harvested at the same time, then fermented whole cluster with foot-treading twice daily. The wine is finally aged for 18 months in 500-liter acacia barrels. The white varietals add a stunning floral, stone fruit element to the already-expressive nose (violets, red fruit, bacon fat). But the wine really soars on the palate, with all of the varietals contributing to its depth. Currant, cherry and briar fruit, wet stone, game and spice, framed by supple tannins and wonderful acidity. Spectacular.
