We've been importing the wines from this small, family-owned and operated Piedmont producer for a number of years now, and their wines never disappoint. If you love Nebbiolo but either lack the patience or the budget for Barolo (or both!), then Ruggeri's Nebbiolo is for you. It comes from the Corsini estate in Monforte d'Alba and is truly fabulous. With its focus, size and power, it's practically a Barolo. The wine is full of the classic Nebbiolo aromas of dried roses, truffle, smoke and hints of earth. There's lots of richness, loads of fruit and a long finish here. The tannins are well-integrated, but they still remind you that this is Nebbiolo. Decant this to drink now or age for a few more years. Try it with risotto studded with porcini, smoked pheasant ravioli or stracoto del Barolo.

We just enjoyed this bottle at home with short ribs. This is Nebbiolo at its purest, with aromas of meat, tar and roses. It took a long time to open up- we decanted it way ahead, but it was only after 3 hours that it really started to show. This is incisive wine and a perfect partner to the meal. The high acidity and tannin in this bottle will be great with all manner of braised meats, but certainly not a bottle to have by itself in front of the TV. The light color is very deceiving- this is a powerhouse. At the end of the meal the understated class of this wine showed through… It was delicious!

Nebbiolo can be hard to approach. The tendency is to start with the more well-known wines of Barolo with high expectations, only to open the wine too young and be left disappointed, wondering what all the fuss is about. Here is key to unlock what the fuss is about. This "entry level" Nebbiolo from Ruggeri Corsini offers the classic Nebbiolo pure cherry fruit and floral expression, subtle spice, hints of iron-like minerality, and firm, noble tannins. Its intent is for drinking in the near term, but one taste and you can see its aging potential. Decant, and serve with a simple mushroom risotto. As the wine opens and interacts with the aromas and flavors of the food, Nebbiolo's magic will be revealed to you while leaving a lasting impression on your palate. You will need lots of these to have on hand to drink while you wait the 25+ years for the higher end Barolos you inevitably will purchase to reach their time. Most of the K&L staff have this wine by the case in their personal cellars.

You can't get classic Nebbiolo for a better direct import price than this! Elegant yet bold, with floral aromas of rose petals, violets, white pepper and tart ripe red cherries. This wine is ready to drink or you can put it away for a few years.

Nebbiolo

- Tar and roses are the two descriptors most associated with this red grape grown, almost solely, in Italy's Piedmont, where it has achieved fame under the guises of the incredibly and age-worthy wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Characterized by chewy tannins, high acidity, high-tone cherry and raspberry fruit and truffle aromas and flavors, Nebbiolo has rightfully earned its reputation. Sadly the late-ripening varietal is quite delicate and is prone to disease as well as damage by hail that frequently pelts the region. Outside of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo is grown in the DOCs of Gattinara, Spanna and Ghemme. The Nebbiolos of the Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC in the southeastern part of Piedmont are generally lighter and more immediately approachable versions of the grape, aged for less time than Barolo and Barbaresco, which also makes them less expensive. Langhe Nebbiolos are generally made from declassified fruit from the aforementioned regions of Barolo, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo d'Alba.

Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. Piedmont

- Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
