K&L Notes

Ancient Peaks is a small family-owned estate winery that produces wine from a single site, the Margarita Vineyard, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774. Situated in the Santa Lucia Mountain Range near the San Luis Obispo border, 14 miles from the ocean, the Margarita Vineyard is the most southerly site within the Paso Robles appellation, where it enjoys a cooler climate and longer growing season than its neighbors to the north. The climate factor, combined with the unique and varying soil types of the Margarita Vineyard, result in the ability of Ancient Peaks to stand out in Paso as producers of terroir-driven wines with great balance and finesse. Wine Spectator wrote of the 2009 vintage: "Ripe and appealingly jammy, with cherry pie and spiced vanilla aromas following through to zesty flavors of raspberry, roasted sage and pepper." (04/2012)

With all the great value wines we tasted at Ancient Peaks, this Zin stood head and shoulders above the rest! Fresh and jammy with lots of ripe red fruits and bright acid, this wine will win over any BBQ crowd this summer.

Blackberry, fig, raisin, sweet vanilla, spice with medium acid and medium tannin. Ancient Peaks' signature wine is their Zin, and this vintage shows the powerfully epxressive fruit they are known for. A very, very well-made Zin at a ridiculously fantastic price! Snap up for summer BBQs!

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
