This wine makes me very happy. This is the third cuvee we’ve worked with from Corte Gardoni (their “Pradica” Bardolino Superiore and “Le Fontaine” Bardolino were both tremendously successful. Every vintage it’s just a matter of which one I like the best, never an easy decision). This is made with 100% of the grape Corvina and carries the Corvina Veronese IGT , as opposed to the Bardolino Superiore DOCG. I love this wine. In fact, it is representative of the kinds of wines I want to drink most these days. If I had more money than I knew what to do with, I would drink nothing but the greatest white and red Burgs from the best producers, old Barolo, Clape Cornas and Champagne (and beer!). Alas, life has not bestowed that upon me (or, unfortunately, you either most likely, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this). But what this has to offer for 15 dollars is not too far off the mark of what that imaginary world could offer . Lighter colored to the point you can easily read through it, the wine has plenty of flesh, but also a firmness. This is undeniable on the palate, but you almost sense it on the nose as well. Some pretty Gamay like cherry fruit, but also a woodsy, incense like nose, with crunchy tannins, acid and minerality in the mouth, all very well balanced with the restrained fruit. The wines of Corte Gardoni have always reminded me of Cru Beaujolais, but this one makes me think more of Trosseau or Poulsard from the Jura. Deceivingly concentrated and supremely elegant at the same time. All this said, while you could certainly pair this with a funghi misti crostini or lighter risotto as part of a multi course, off the charts meal, you could also throw a fairly good chill on this and bring it to a picnic to be sipped out of plastic cups. Just an awesome wine that I can’t say enough good things about. But not for fans of The Prisoner! CM
