The more deeply colored 2009 Artigas offers a more complex aromatic array as well as greater structure, depth and concentration. Drink the 2008 for its elegance, the 2009 for its power. Both nicely reflect the traits of their respective vintages. Bodegas Mas Alta, based in the Priorat village of Vilella Alta, is a partnership of five Belgian families. They have hired the duo of Frenchmen Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie (of Rhone Valley renown) as consultants. Since 1999 they have planted 77 acres of vines, mostly on slate at altitude. The top cuvees are made from old-vine fruit purchased from local growers. (5/ 2011)
Though light-bodied, this lively red delivers focused and intense cherry, berry, cola and toast flavors that turn a bit candied on the finish. Mazuela, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2016. 300 cases imported. (Web-2012)
