2010 Domaine de Gioielli Cap Corse Blanc

Cap Corse is a sparsely populated penninsula on the island of Corsica. Founder Michel Angeli established the domaine after settling on the island to escape the bombardments of World War II. The first harvest was in 1952 on this long forgotten piece of land which was originally established by the Genovese Empire in the 14th century.. Michel Angeli still works the vineyard, and his wine is now imported into the United States by Kermit Lynch, even though it was never intended much beyond the local and enthusiastic seafaring population. Wine Advocate wrote of the 2009 vintage: "Angeli’s 2009 Coteaux du Cap Corse Blanc (into whose Vermentino he may or may not have sneaked some Codivarta) is bound to put one in mind of salt spray, flowering hedgerows, and scrubby herbs, whether or not their actual proximity to these vines is a flavor determinant. Subtly oily in texture and with bitterness of citrus zest and rosemary balanced by a salt-tinged pineapple and lime character, this finishes long on invigoration and refreshment." The largest appellation in the region is the Cotes de Provence that spans 49,600 acres of land in and around Marseilles. Thirteen different varietals are grown in this appellation with the most important grapes being Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, and Mouvedre. While much of the production is dry rose, there are many more serious wines being made from the area. Some of the most important smaller appellations within Provence include Bandol, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois.
