Sourced from their estate Margarita Vineyard, the Ancient Peaks 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon simultaneously benefits from one of the coolest sites and longest growing seasons in the region. Combined with the diverse and ancient soil types of the vineyard, Ancient Peaks produces a Cabernet Sauvignon with excellent structure and depth. Plum and cherry are complimented by chocolate and licorice on the nose, while cassis, spice, and leather fill out the palate. A food-friendly alcohol level rounds out the appeal of this juicy Paso Robles Cabernet.

This is easily one of our best domestic Cabernet Sauvignon deals in the store. Plenty of black currant, blackberry, and vanilla flavors with nice acid and tanin from quite an amazing vineyard. Great texture with plenty of depth and structure very uncommon at this price.

Full of grippy, structured dark fruit, this is serious Cab value for the money. Tough to do much better in Cab Land for under $15....

The Margarita vineyard where these grapes come from is on a part of the ranch known as "Oyster Ridge". The name comes from the ancient oyster fossils which are very unusually right at the surface of the soil. This part of the land used to be 50 feet under the surface of the ocean! Blackberry, plum, red cherry, black currant, vanilla with medium plus acid and medium plus tannin. A wonderfully fruity Cab with great structure from a historic place! Incredible value- fabulous for parties!

Finding a good California Cabernet for under $15 should not be as hard as it is. Luckily, Bryan and our intrepid team of California wine specialists have found a dynamite bottle in this Ancient Peaks Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon. This comes from a giant tract of land that was planted to vineyard by the Mondavi's and purchased by the Ancient Peaks folks. The attention to detail is here in this all estate wine, and it has very good texture to go along with its extroverted fruit.

Like most of us here at K&L, I'm the go-to gal among my friends and family for wine recommendations, and I pride myself on turning people on to great values. (I really love to show that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get good wine.) The Ancient Peaks Cab fits that bill to a "t." This ruby-hued wine has plum and spice on the nose with just a hint of pipe tobacco that reminds me of being a little kid, when men still smoked pipes. The fruit is brighter and redder in the mouth, with notes of black cherry and currant, spice and a kiss of smoke. It's totally balanced, with soft tannins that make it easy to drink, and bright acidity that make it food friendly too. A must-have for barbecues this summer.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
