(from deep volcanic ash and loess): Bright red with ruby highlights. Plush and sweet but sappy too, with a distinctly low-pH mouthfeel to the cool flavors of berries, licorice, flowers and garrigue. Very suave syrah in an approachable style, finishing with restrained sweetness, rather light tannins and very good length. (12/ 2012)
From the winery: "'Ex Umbris' is Latin for 'out of the shadows'. Originally made as a one-off due to a wildfire that resulted in tremendously smoky grapes, this wine has become a NW signature Syrah." The 2009 vintage Owen Roe's Ex-Umbris scored 93 points and was wine #25 on their "Top 100" list of 2011.
