I was just reminded how the Chardonnay grape can produce some of the most delicious white wine the world has ever known. I tasted this wine at a consumer tasting we were doing at a local restaurant and was floored. I knew I had to get to know this wine better so I picked up a bottle to have with dinner the following night (last night in fact. Well… not last night as you read this, but last night as I write this. However, I’m so stoked on this wine, there is a possibility I actually DID have it last night). Anyway, I digress. Simply put my friends, if you love great white Burgundy, you must try this wine. The soils are very similar to those of the Cote de Beaune. Both areas are in the same basin of ancient limestone, and, in fact, the latitude of the Montrachet vineyard appears to run smack through the Arbois appellation just 60 or so miles due east, give or take a couple tenths of a degree. Tasting this wine blind, I would certainly be thinking Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru at the very least. This little gem has more Puligny-Montrachetness than many a Puligny Montrachet in fact. It’s so extracted and dense, I was questioning on a couple of sips if it perhaps had a bit of residual sugar. But the finish is so snappy, vervy and mineral laden, I can’t guess this is anything but bone dry. Wow, what a wine. Oh, there is a hint of barrique aging in the mouthfeel but if there is any oak, it’s exceptionally well integrated. I had the first part of the bottle just sipping while I prepped some dinner, and the second half with some Orzo with chicken, peas, celery, garlic, truffled olive oil and a healthy dose (or unhealthy dose perhaps) of parmesan mixed in and it was superb for both purposes. Can’t recommend this one highly enough. CM
