 The 2008 Crianza is a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% -others- from around Abalos that is raised in French and American oak. It has a natural, red currant and cranberry-scented bouquet with a touch of tomato vine. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, edgy tannins and exquisite balance. There are light red berries, tobacco notes and an earthy tincture towards the finish of this simple, but highly pleasurable Crianza. Drink now-2018.  (8/ 2012)

K&L Notes

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Nearly all of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 26 hectares, which are generally north facing and located between 300 and 600 meters in altitude, all within the village of Abalos, very rare in a region where sourcing from various villages and even sub-zones is more the norm. Produced from primarily estate fruit (Tempranillo, with a touch of Garnacha and Graciano), this is a lovely Crianza that beautifully shows the elegance of the vintage. Mixed berries and a hint of earthy savor on the nose lead to a palate showing delicious fruit of terrific cut and purity. The wine was aged in used French and American oak barrels (roughly 50% each), racked twice, and lightly filtered prior to being bottled and undergoing additional aging at the winery. This wine seems to get better each new vintage we get. The red fruited character of the Crianza shines in the 2008 vintage, but it isn't as big or as obvious as a Rhone wine or as over the top as something California. It's a perfect hint of berry balanced by acidity and minerality. It's the red table wine of the summer, for sure, and it's my new go-to bottle for customer recommendations. You get it all for less than $20.

This is w wonderful medium bodied wine. When you are looking for a break from big extracted California wine, reach for the Puelles. Crunchy red fruit drives this wine, bright acidity and enough structure to lay day down for a bit longer as well as be enjoyed tonight.

A lovely Crianza with cherry cola, tobacco and coffee aromas that carry over to the palate with a hint of fresh sasparilla. Nicely balanced and approachable now.

Part of the first wave of our new Spanish direct import program, this is a classic Crianza at a great price. Bright, tangy red fruits take the lead here - fresh berries and sour cherry. Barrel aging in a mix of used American and French oak adds texture and subtle spice notes. Light, floral notes on the nose lend intrigue. I drink a lot of French and Italian wines, but more and more lately I find myself turning to Spain and to Rioja. Salud!

This has to be one of my favorite Riojas that we have available. Medium deep ruby in color, the perfume of this lovely Gem is loaded with currants and cassis tones that carry over nicely to its complex, silky mouthfeel. Although drinking well now, you will be able age this Rioja another four to eight years, easily. Rusty has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house reds for however it is around. (Jim Barr)

I love this wine for its nervy, bright fruit and real sense of chalky minerality it unfailingly conveys. The best part about this juicy, lively red wine is how versatile it is at table. Seared steak with roasted potatoes, oven roasted chicken with herbs, garlic and lemon served over watercress, a fennel stuffed whole grilled arctic char...these are just a few quick and easy possibilities to cook up and serve with this delicious Rioja.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
