*Best Buy* Pungent and superripe when first poured, this wine's dimpled black fruit character turns toward blueberries and mineral-inflected tannins with air. It's substantial and intense, needing hours in a decanter or several years in bottle for the tannins to eat the sweetness of the wine. For short ribs. (6/ 2012)
Primarily sourced from the Collins Holystone Vineyard in St. Helena, the vineyard experiences a warm climate and consistantly early ripening. Temperate weather during the 2008 harvest imparted complexity and even maturity in the vineyard's small berries. Fruit from Yountville, Atlas Peak, Calistoga, Spring Mountain, Rutherford, Carneros, Chiles Valley, Oakville, and Oak Knoll round out the blend. From winemaker Mike McGrath: "Aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, ripe black cherries, bittersweet chocolate and new leather emanate from this classic Napa Valley Cabernet. The wine glides smoothly across the palate with flavors of sweet berries accented with walnut and oak flavors. Postured grape and oak tannins provide a rich, firm texture that will make it an enjoyable accompaniment to cheeses, rib roasts and racks of lamb."
