There's fascinating umami fruitiness to this godello (75 percent) blended with the gleaming grapefruit-pith acidity of treixadura. The wine has the woodland cool of a fern grove, a tension built on slightly underripe peach and a red fruit tone that hints at strawberry. Chill it for roast squid stuffed with chorizo." (10/ 2011)
Castro de Lobarzan is a small family-owned and operated winery in Galicia producing wines from entirely estate-grown fruit. This white wine is predominantly Godello, with 25% Treixedura, aged for 3-4 months in stainless steel sur lie. There's weekly batonnage, which adds aromatic dimension and texture to the wine. Lemon-lime aromas, with an undercurrent of melon carries to the palate where the melon and pomme fruits put on weight. Chalky minerality deftly weaves from the nose to the palate. Bright, MINERAL, focused yellow fruit aromas lead to a juicy, precise, palate, with excellent drive and intensity. Rich yellow fruits have good staying power on the long finish. This is the wine you want to have on hand for seafood, which is essential to the cuisine of Galicia, especially for grilled octopus, razor clams or shrimp tossed with hot oil and garlic.
