Buehler has received some high praise from critics recently, including a "Top Value" designation from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate for their 2009 Russian River Chardonnay, where it was highlighted as a wine "readers should be buying...by the case" (08/11). Well, the 2010 "Reserve" is another winner. At only $17.99, the "Reserve" is a big step up in intensity for a few more dollars; it's a smaller quantity production and offers a richer, more complex profile. Exhibiting ripe tropical citrus and peach aromas and flavors, with honeysuckle and caramelized apple highlights, the 2010 is creamy and full in the mouth, offering additional flavors of creme caramel, pie crust, and candied ginger on the palate. The finish is long and toasty, with an underlying succulence. All these layers of complexity come courtesy of specialized Burgundian winemaking techniques that include whole cluster pressing followed by immediate racking to 30% new French oak, and then nine months of ageing on the lees with weekly stirring, which impart the characteristics of added structure, creaminess, flavor complexity and body to the wine.
