Oakville Cabernet for under $25! We've seen a few tongue and cheek wine producers come and go, and more than a few new names that make it their business to go around the world buying up fantastic and value-packed wines produced from some of the best sites in the wine world. Well, this Vinistry is the latest of these, and possibly the greatest, too. Winemaker Dan O'Donnell has worked at Ravenswood, Laird Family Estates (along with winemakers from Aubert, Lewis, Crane, Paul Hobbs and Voss) before this venture. This Cabernet from Oakville displays ripe black currant fruit aromas and complex layered flavors such as caramel, earthiness, and spice. This particular wine is well suited to be served with robust meat dishes, spicy cuisines, pungent cheeses, and is of course perfectly enjoyable on its own. Look for more exciting wines from Dan, and all of them a steal.

A delicious new find for domestic Cabernet! Ripe on the nose with subtle spice notes of cedar and herb. Very lush and drinkable on the palate with just the right amount of acid and polished tannins to be drinkable now! From a small producer with a limited supply so hurry and get yours before its gone!

Whimsically-worded proclamations and self-aggrandizing, sovereign edicts abound in the playful labeling and marketing concepts behind this new producer, reminding one of the magical worlds of Nick Bantock or the Republic of Tea, but it still comes down to the goods in the bottle. Accepting that Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the respected Oakville appellation in Napa Valley usually command high prices, and that this wine retails in store for twenty-two bucks, what can one expect? How about a fragrant, deep-hued, youthful wine with blackcurrant and sweet cassis aromas, a core of ripe plum on the palate underpinned by layers of vanilla, spice and mocha, finishing with a touch of earth and smooth tannins.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
