SKU #1086055 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Gorgeously aromatic with notes of freshly pressed apple, wildflower honey and tangerine peel, this is a richly textured, almost creamy, ice wine. Intense flavors of honey and fresh apple ripple on the palate, with striking lemon acidity that lends a squeaky clean finish. (11/ 2012)

K&L Notes

Made from naturally frozen grapes that are harvested only when the temperature drops to -10 degrees Centigrade, this Riesling Icewine shows the elegance of tropical aromas and flavors of lemon and lime. The good acidity of Riesling allows for a refreshing mouth feel amid the layers of flavors that unfold. Great with lemon-based desserts or tarts along with fresh fruit-based desserts; rich cheeses accompanied by fresh or dried fruit or delightful all on its own!

Varietal:

Riesling

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Pršdikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Spštlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.
Country:

Canada

- Canada's thriving wine industry is concentrated in the four provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Because of the extreme climates of these Region, grapes tend to be grown near large bodies of water, which balance the effects of the severe winters. For the same reason, snow-resistant North American grape varieties like Concord and Niagara, the French Vidal Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir are grown in Canada. Additionally, Riesling, Chardonnay and Merlot are becoming more popular. The Canadian wine industry is most recognized as the largest producer of Icewine in the world.
