2009 Domaine de Vodanis Vouvray Sec (Previously $22)

SKU #1085296

The nose starts off dusty, chalky, slightly tight and austere like the rest of the wine. Then, after some swirling around it really begins to open up. Stone fruit aromatics and limestone minerality starts to dance around while the texture begins to build with warm peaches and apricots and a lively, persistent finish with juicy acidity. The Domaine de Vodanis was created in 2007 by two young friends, Francois Gilet and Nicolas Darracq. With the help of Francois's family, they took over a long-term lease on the Vodanis Vineyard (4, 5Ha) from the famed Huet estate, which had recently changed ownership. The estate of Domaine de Vodanis is situated on limestone soils around the town of Rochecorbon, with vines averaging around 25 years old. The philosophy of this estate revolves around respecting and observing the rhythms of nature, so they use entirely sustainable farming practices, borrowing many techniques from the biodynamic canon. Hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts in small stainless steel and fiberglass tanks and then allowed to rest on its lees for 8 months while in tank. 12.5%ABV

From a property once owned by Huet, the 2009 Domaine de Vodanis Vouvrey Sec offers a great introduction to classic dry Vouvray: a nose of honey and citrus peel with lanolin undertones, a palate that is broad and sweeping but defined by crisp acidity and a chalky, almost saline mineral backbone. It has incredible length for an under $25 Vouvray, with a lingering 'pâte de guimauve' aftertaste.

Who needs chardonnay when you have Vouvray like this? Excellent, restrained stone fruits, nectarine and minerals on the nose. Dry in the mouth with tart peach and apricot fruit. This is a lively, dry Vouvray that is a great foil to white fish, goat cheese and Asian noodles.

Varietal:

Chenin Blanc

- Also called Pineau de la Loire and Pineau d'Anjou. Chenin Blanc is an expressive white French varietal that makes beautiful dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Traditionally grown in the Loire Valley, the wines made from this varietal are typically labeled geographically. Vouvray Chenins are traditionally medium-sweet; Savennières Chenins are typically bright and crisp; Coteaux du Layon Chenins like Bonezeaux and Quarts de Chaume are among the world's most sought-after sweet wines, and the sparkling Chenins of Saumur are perfumed and delicious. What all of these iterations of the grape have in common is their ability to age, a gift bestowed upon them because of the grape's naturally high-acidity.

Loire

- Of all of the French wine producing regions, the Loire might produces the greatest variety of wines. They range from still to sparkling, very dry and acidic to hearty sweet, and clear in color to a deep purple. The diversity of wine produced in this region is due in part to its dynamic climate, which ranges from Continental to Mediterranean. This region is best known for Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc and Cabernet Franc. The most famous areas in the Loire Valley may be Sancerre and Vouvray.
