 Bright straw-gold. Pungent, floral aromas of pink grapefruit, orange blossom, smoky bacon and sweet spices. Suave, dense and fresh, with harmonious acidity giving the wine's floral and ripe tropical fruit flavors terrific lift. A less opulent, more refined version of Gewurz that would have merited an even higher score with a little more complexity and definition.  (10/ 2011)

A family-run domaine since 1142, Pacher-hof produces some of region's most exciting white wines from varietals more commonly associated with Germany than Italy, like this Traminer (a.k.a. Gewürztraminer). It may come as a surprise to you, but this aromatic, full-bodied, luscious white wine with exotic floral and lightly spicy characteristics is one of the most sought-after wines in the Valle Isarco. Cool-climate acidity adds freshess and verve to this complex, rich white, lifting the floral and nutty tropical fruit aromas and flavors and accentuating its distinctive gingery spice. Pair this beauty with a variety of richer and/or exotic dishes, ranging from a classic goose liver terrine to spicy Asian-style grilled prawns.

This wine recently blew us all away at a staff tasting- we gasped from first sniff. 100% Gewurztraminer (whose name literally means "spicy one from Traminer"). Classic aromas of muscat, apricot, citrus, rose and jasmine. Great acid, fleshy body. This lovely Italian could stand up proudly and show well against any Alsacian gewurtz any day. Perfect for spring!

Gewurztraminer

- Thought to have originated in the city of Tramin in Italy's Alto Adige, Gewürztraminer is actually a pink-skinned incarnation of the Traminer varietal, and also the most widely planted variation. Known for its heady perfume redolent of rose petals and spice and tropical lychee flavor, its fuller body and moderate acidity, it can be made in a variety of styles ranging from completely dry to sweet late harvest wines. The best representations of the grape are grown in Austria and France's Alsace, though it's being made in smaller quantities in Eastern Europe, Italy, the Pacific Northwest, California, New Zealand and Australia.
